Description

MY DIARY BY VOLUME invites readers into a private inner realm of lived and documented experiences. Ranging from high school diary entries in the 1970s to pandemic challenges in 2021, Butt musically weaves the reader beyond the constraints of ordered narrative — considering the weight of how memory and thought are stored in the soul.

Praise for MY DIARY BY VOLUME

"The diary form can be deadly: the reader's interest doesn't always survive the record of the everyday. In Butt's hands, however, the diary becomes an imaginarium of stunning images, provocative juxtapositions, and musical texture. Gone are the demands of narrative--replaced by embodied experience, impression, sensuality, and slippage. Reading these poems is akin to catching yourself falling into a dream logic where parataxis and surreality create a rich multiverse of meaning. In moving the diary form away from narrative cohesion, Butt perhaps brings us closer to how memory and experience actually work. These are certainly poems I will not soon forget." — Tom Cull

"Robyn Marie Butt, in My Diary By Volume, challenges herself and the reader to experience 'storylessness,' to move outside and beyond narrative. Throughout a selection of her recent and earlier diaries, she explores events, quotations, sensations, dreams, past lives — the mundane and the visionary, the song that never needs to be finished — in a playful dance that defies any order, categorization, or meaning, as it reaches toward sudden glimpses of pure soul." — Marianne Micros
